The Open Unit A2H horizontal well in the Howard County Wolfcamp section was brought on production at a peak daily rate of 1,504 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d), Big Star Oil & Gas LLC said Oct. 7.

The well’s peak 30-day average is 1,321boe/d. It is the third-best horizontal Wolfcamp A producer in the Permian Basin, coming in behind the company's recent Ryder Unit A2H and Pioneer Natural Resources' Sale Ranch 15B 2H.

Open Unit A2H’s productive lateral length is 7,500 feet. The well was completed in 39 stages, the company said. There are several nearby locations to be drilled, Stella Swanson, a partner and vice president of land for Big Star, said. The Open Unit A2H and the Ryder well are both in the Fairway project area near Big Spring, Texas, she said, noting that there are plans to drill 34 more wells in the contiguous acreage block. This includes the Masters Unit A1H well, she said, which was recently drilled. It will be completed in October.

The contiguous block has reservoir-grade Lower Spraberry and Wolfcamp B shale. Core samples of the Middle Spraberry were taken, and Diamondback Energy is interested in that area, the company said. Additionally, Endeavor Energy Resources operates a nearby Cline horizontal, the Guitar 1-4 1H. Including all five intervals, there could be more than 125 locations in this area, Swanson added.

Big Star identified more than 250 gross development locations in the Wolfcamp A, Wolfcamp B, and Lower Spraberry shale horizons across its 13,000 net acres of Midland Basin leasehold. The company is currently drilling its fifth Howard County horizontal shale well.

Big Star Oil & Gas LLC is based in Midland, Texas.
