State-owned Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) has reportedly restored the lion’s share of production shut in after a fire late last week at its Cantarell complex’ Nohoch-A offshore platform.
The fire, immediately controlled by Pemex, only impacted one of five platforms at the complex, according to Pemex.
The July 7 incident resulted in immediate loss production of approximately 700,000 bbl of oil due to Pemex shutting in practically all the wells in the area, Pemex general director Octavio Romero Oropeza said July 8 in an official video posted on Twitter.
Pemex has “recuperated 600,000 barrels and we’re going for [the remaining] 100,000 [barrels],” Romero said.

Pemex is responsible for the lion’s share of Mexico’s oil and gas production. Offshore Mexico is where the company derives over 70% of its oil production and just over 50% of its gas production, according to company data on its website.
Three Pemex employees were injured as a result of the fire. All three Pemex employees are out of immediate life-threatening danger, according to a press release from the Mexico City-based national oil company.
However, the company said two employees from a private company working at the platform died due to the incident and another is still missing. Pemex said five employees with the private company were injured during the incident but all are out of immediate danger.
