According to officials in Morocco, the country could be holding 50 billion barrels of untouched oil shale. The country's Office of National Hydrocarbons and Mines also hinted that there could be potential for shale gas development as well.
The Moroccan government has stated that the deposits of oil shale have been located in 10 different areas of the country. The locations that have undergone the most analyzation have been Tangier and Timahdit.
A company based out of Estonia, Enefit, has been assessing the resources. The company signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Morocco concerning the oil shale analysis in April 2010. Enefit is simultaneously working on an oil shale project in Jordan.
More information on this new development will be published as it becomes available.
