In July of 2014, QEP Energy Inc. entered into three definitive agreements to sell non-core oil and gas properties. Two of the agreements provided for the sale of oil and gas properties in the Cana Woodford and Granite Wash plays in the western Anadarko Basin in western Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle.

In one transaction, Cimarex Energy Co. signed an agreement to acquire oil and gas assets primarily in the Cana Woodford Shale play in western Oklahoma for $497.4 million in cash. Simultaneously, Cimarex entered into an agreement with Devon Energy to sell at closing a 50% interest in these assets for $248.7 million.

Also in July, Cimarex reported it plans to spend approximately $420 million for exploration and development activity in the greater Cana region during 2014, with about $300 million earmarked for Woodford wells and the balance for other opportunities on its large acreage position. The announcement followed the previous acquisition of assets in the region from QEP Resources for $238 million. The acquisition added approximately 140 billion cubic feet equivalent of proved developed reserves, net production of 35 million cubic feet equivalent per day and 50,000 net acres, including 30,000 net acres in the Cana Woodford area and oil-rich East Cana area.
