This week Royal Dutch Shell Plc is meeting with Russian officials in regard to a possible coalbed methane operation in Siberia, according to Bloomberg.
Christian Bukovics, Shell’s vice president of exploration in Russia, the Caspian and Ukraine met with Kemerovo Governor Aman Tuleyev on Sept. 24, according to Vera Surzhenko, a spokeswoman for Shell.
“The Kemerovo region is Russia’s leading coal province and may be of interest for Shell given our expertise and advanced technologies in coalbed methane,” said Surzhenko.
According to estimates by Alexei Miller, OAO Gazprom’s chief executive officer, Russia could contain as much as 87 trillion cubic meters of coalbed methane. It is well-known that the country houses one of the largest reserves of natural gas in the world.
Despite the planned meeting, Surzhenko commented that it is “too early to say anything specifically” in regard to a confirmed project.
